What interests me about Kuwait and the other Gulf states is the way that – because of the number of people from all around the world who come there to live and work – so many cultures mix. Whose cultures are “pro” staring, and whose are against it?

I used to think of the entire region as part of the same “pro-staring culture” – until I met a lovely Saudi woman who, like me, lives in Beirut. She said: sometimes I cannot stand the people here. They are so rude – staring and staring. At home, no one would stare at another person like this.

She wasn’t making a point about abayas vs. mini-skirts but about what behaviors the two cultures consider appropriate. In Lebanon and Syria, people seem to stare because they find other people so _interesting_, from what they wear, to how they interact with others.

great topic for a post and a podcast – as starer or stare-ee there are many in the region who can relate!
